The LAPA Family Law Section
Presents:
Domestic Violence and Mothers Behind Bars
Incarcerated mothers, who are survivors of domestic violence and non-violent offenders are one of the fastest growing prison populations in California.
Featuring: Meredith Alexander, Esq., of Harriett Buhai Center for Family Law
This presentation will explore the specific connection between domestic violence and parental incarceration, and the negative effects that domestic violence and incarceration have on parents, children, and their family law cases. Ms. Alexander will discuss the impact of Family Law Code Section 3044, together with an in-depth analysis of the difference between the “best interests of the child” standard and the “change in circumstances” standard for modifying custody orders. Attendees will also learn how to develop custody and visitation plans to help parents reconnect with their children.
Meredith Alexander, Esq. is a Staff Attorney at the Harriett Buhai Center for Family Law and served as the Legal Instructor for the Center’s Mothers Behind Bars Project. Ms. Alexander provides direct legal services to low-income individuals for their family law matters. The majority of her clients are survivors of domestic violence.
