2010 Buhai Brunch

On Sunday, November 14, 2010 the Center hosted its 11th Annual Buhai Brunch at the House of Blues. Mistress of Ceremonies (and Buhai Brunch creator) Laura A. Wasser welcomed over 300 guests for a morning of dancing, delicious Southern food and a fun-filled performance by reggae group the Wailing Souls. The 2010 event raised over $130,000 to support the Center’s work.

Former client A. N. spoke about the impact of the Center’s services on him. He came to the Center fearing for the safety of his child. With the help of the Center, its Pro Bono program and volunteer lawyer Melissa Kaufman, his daughter is in his custody and safe from harm. A.’s moving speech thanked the Center’s staff, volunteers and supporters:

“To those who work and volunteer at the Center, I want to say thank you for everything and I will never forget all that you did for me and my daughter. Please keep doing the great work you’re doing because you make a real difference. I don’t know where my daughter and I would be today without the Center.”

Volunteer Melissa Kaufman has a long history with the Center. Her journey from law intern to pro bono attorney has been life changing. “The Center restores lives. I know it restored mine. When I began volunteering at the Harriett Buhai Center three years ago I had reached rock bottom in my personal life. Within one week of volunteering at the Center, I felt alive again. A.’s’ case has special meaning to me because it was one of the first times I went to court to argue a case before a judge. It was a huge step in my career, and I am very proud to have represented him.”
